Meet Kate Moore, a lively 16-year-old high school sophomore from Des Moines, Iowa. Like many other teens, she’s been known to send a text or two. But her aptitude for texting goes beyond sending sneaky messages to friends during math class: Moore’s messaging habit has won her $60,000 in prize money — not to mention fame both at home and abroad — in less than a year.
“I got a phone in my first year of high school, a year and a half ago,” Moore says. Soon after, she entered the LG U.S. National Texting Championship held in New York and won, netting a cool $50,000 and a seat in the burgeoning sport’s worldwide championship, held last month. Together with teammate Morgan Dynda, Moore went on to place second, behind a team from Korea.
